Thrift Shopping at it's Finest

Sometimes, we have to let go of routines in order to open ourselves up to new experiences. In this case, I'm talking about thrift shopping! See past the clutter and time spent digging, and you'll find unique pieces or even basic staples at a fraction of the cost! Thrift shopping is like most things in life; you have to start with the right mentality--patient and open-minded! Otherwise, you won't find anything.

Now, can we talk about this incredible denim jacket?! I found it in a pile of denim jackets at an antique flea market in Oakland, CA. So here I am, wearing denim on denim--like it's nobody's business!

Lately, I've been into looks that evoke emotions of days gone by. In this case, it's the denim daze of the 80's and 90's. I swooped on this awesome jacket at an antique flea market in Oakland, CA. The back of the jacket is embellished with Cirque Du Soleil branding and a geometric sun.  And to think I only paid $10.00 for this lovely gem!

I used to be a name brand junkie, but that's such a complex which I am so glad has left me. The denim shorts I'm wearing are real denim, and we all know what it's like to get our hands on a pair of form-fitting, actual denim. Such a rarity!

The baseball tee was from Coachella 2012, the year with an eclectic, star-studded line-up. The year of the the Tupac hologram. And a great year for t-shirts, being that my shirts from other years don't look nearly as cool.

Not every piece you find has to have a story, but it's just a little more special when it does.

By the way, I want to add that I felt so tired and sleep-deprived before this shoot, not to mention I overate the night before, plus some dramatic back and forth scheduling conflicts. I pushed through the nonsense and brought myself to shoot anyway, and it ended up being my favorite shoot to date. Push yourself, only great things will come from it.

Advanced Warfare

Jacket: Scarlett Fever, Scarf: Free People, Boots: Superdry, Stockings: Urban Outfitters Purse: Rebecca Minkoff // Photos taken by: Dijon Bowden

This Indian summer is coming to a close in northern California. I can't believe we're finally experiencing darker, cooler nights. A stylish way to stay warm this season is the high thigh trend--we're talking OTK (over-the-knee) stockings and OTK boots. Stuart Weitzman makes the most amazing OTK boots, but until I can justify buying a pair, I'll make do with my black stockings and clunky combat boots from Superdry.

I threw on some denim shorts and a basic white tunic to downplay the sultry OTK look. I picked a mid-length jacket to complement the length of my tunic. This camo jacket is still one of my favorite pieces in the closet. I love it's length, shape and the edgy studded shoulders custom designed by Scarlett Fever, a sweetheart whose online boutique I found via Instagram. She has amazing taste if you want to take a look at her store here. I finished the look with this awesome fringed infinity scarf from Free People. I love how well red and green go together, but remember to consider mixing prints so that you don't look like a bright Christmas tree! My Rebecca Minkoff purse has been collecting dust in my closet for years now. Carrying her around again feels warm and familiar like rekindling an old flame. It's funny how great pieces evoke emotions similar to romantic love--that can't be just me, right?

Writer and photographer Dijon Bowden met for the first time when we walked and talked as we scouted locations to shoot. We strolled along the streets of San Francisco and I love how he captured me in these photos as we discussed a colorful range of topics including photography, the human body and what inspires our creativity. All of these photos are unedited, and I couldn't be happier with how they turned out! Happiness can be your best accessory. #nofilter

I hope this post inspires you to try something new, or spark a conversation with a stranger--you never know what's out there until you explore. Thanks for reading, friends! Have a wonderful week!

Schoolgirl Feelings

Top: Tildon (also worn here), Skirt: H&M (also worn here), Necklace: Xevana, Shoes: Jeffrey Campbell  |  Photos by Carl Mahoney

My skater skirt strikes again! I love the scuba-suit neoprene and the way it flounces as I move. It's probably my favorite H&M purchase to date! Naturally, I paired it with this sheer button-up and stockings for the classic schoolgirl look. If you have been following my blog, you would know that I literally live in my Xevana necklace--it goes with everything! Or perhaps I just wear it with everything? Embrace who you are and do as you please: That's the beauty of personal style!

I'm not sure why I'm drawn to juxtaposing a pretty outfit against a run-down place. Yet here I am once again exploring dark and desolate areas. I thought it would be interesting to switch it up and do a nighttime shoot. The darkness adds a cinematic touch, wouldn't you agree?

It's that time to reload on my caffeine. I hope you all are having a fantastic week! Thanks so much for stopping by!
